Protecting the Low-Hanging ICS Fruit

AboitizPower, Siemens Energy Executives Discuss Risks, Funding for OT
Alexander Antukh, CISO, AboitizPower, and Mex Martinot, vice president and global head of industrial cybersecurity, Siemens Energy

The industrial control system security space has evolved over the decades, and organizations and governments are paying more attention and bringing new changes in the space over the past few years.

Some new focus areas include new regulation in the U.S., Australia and APAC; changes in public and private programs, including the establishment of formal programs in companies; and a boom in vendor offerings, said Alexander Antukh, CISO of AboitizPower.

But the popularity has also led to a lot of noise in the space. "There is a big trend in a lot of companies to offer operational technology security solutions plus services. But not everybody necessarily has that expertise. It's a positive sign overall that there is that focus now. It's just that the rapid growth doesn't meet up with the capability that's there today," said Mex Martinot, vice president and global head of industrial cybersecurity at Siemens Energy.

In this video of a panel discussion sponsored by CyberEdBoard and recorded at RSA Conference 2023, Antukh and Martinot discuss:

  • What adversaries focus on during an OT attack;
  • Vulnerabilities brought on by COVID-19 and their impact on businesses;
  • Why OT is underfunded despite being low-hanging fruit for threat actors.

Martinot is responsible for extending the company's cybersecurity practice worldwide. His focus is on solving the cybersecurity challenge in the critical energy infrastructure sector by bringing unique solutions to address the growing and costly operational security risk.
