Fortinet's Turnbull on Responding to IoT threats
IoT Security: The Patching Challenge

As the Internet of Things gains momentum, issues around patching, upgrading and mitigating security issues on devices, especially ones running real-time operating systems pose major challenges. And in the typical enterprise, there is a clear lack of infrastructure, capability and maybe even the desire to address some of these issues, says Darren Turnbull, vice president within the CTO's office at security vendor Fortinet.

"People don't have the first clue [about] how to go about patching these devices," Turnbull says. "We have to operate under the premise that these things will be broken in ways we don't know and the designers didn't intend. These issues need to be faced up to and it's going to take a number of incidents before people insist that these things be taken more seriously."

Information Security Media Group caught up with Turnbull at a recent summit organized by business consultancy Gartner in Mumbai. In this exclusive interview, Turnbull addresses a range of topics including data center and network security in the current technology landscape.

"The challenge of consolidating data on the Cloud, while keeping it segregated at the same time, has introduced some unique architectural choices," says Turnbull. "Organizations cannot afford to lose sight of security even as they take advantage of these new paradigms in the Data Center."

Turnbull, based in EMEA, has been responsible for ensuring that the development of Fortinet's solutions align to both the functional and performance requirements across a range of technologies and network environments. Prior to Fortinet, he spent nearly 20 years with British Telecom in the UK in a variety of senior operational, network and security design roles, and understands the needs of the carrier community.
