The Impact of Localization on Cloud Service Providers

Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy of Business Software Alliance Advocates a Different Approach
The Impact of Localization on Cloud Service Providers

Data localization would increase costs to cloud service providers and change the services available for consumers, says Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy, country manager, India, for BSA | The Software Alliance, who calls for minimizing regulatory burdens.

"Data localization will disrupt operations significantly for both the fiduciaries and processors," Krishnamoorthy says in an interview with Information Security Media Group. "It is not possible for cloud service providers to have all their services and functionality available in every country since part of the cost savings and efficiencies that cloud service providers are able to offer result from economies of scale."

India is contemplating a law to mandate that multinational corporations and cloud service providers have a data server located in the country to store Indian citizens' data locally.

Krishnamoorthy, who represents the interests of technology firms, says the government should focus on creating a competitive market for cloud computing. "The policy environment must not include any unnecessary regulatory burdens," he says. "Furthermore, the government should be looking at strengthening the cybersecurity ecosystem in the country so that cloud service providers are able to implement cutting-edge cybersecurity technology."

In this interview with Information Security Media Group (see audio link below photo), Krishnamurthy also discusses his views on:

  • How best to promote cloud computing and privacy;
  • Why he believes that data localization will hamper growth of companies;
  • Whether data localization would lead to better data security.

Krishnamoorthy is the country manager in India for BSA, a global organization that represents the interests of software companies. He leads on policy issues around personal data protection, privacy, cybersecurity, cloud adoption and emerging technologies. He also drives BSA's compliance programs for promoting use of legal and secure software.
