Do APAC Security Leaders Hold a Global Advantage?

It is consistently said that APAC ranks behind more developed markets such as Europe and North America in terms of maturity, However, APAC's imperative to conduct global business and cutting edge technology adoption means that it actually may be at the forefront of facing the latest problems in security with new approaches, says Maurizio Garavello, VP APAC at Forcepoint, formerly Raytheon Websense.

Asia is a unique market, where companies must comply not just with local regulations, where wide disparities may exist. But they also have to comply with global regimes - which makes for a very challenging environment for CISOs and CIOs.

"For a long time, the emerging markets and APAC have kept thinking that they were behind the rest of the globe, so this market has been playing a smaller role that what it can in reality play," says Garavello. "I find that a lot of partners and resellers are willing to invest heavily in training to get to the level that they feel Europe or the United States is at."

There may be some issues on the point products because the volume of the business is not so big as compared to more developed markets, but the complexity of the business remains the same, and they need to be at a par with the Western world in understanding the same, he says.

For instance, in its previous avatar, Websense's success as a DLP player in Asia was tremendous - much more than in Europe or the U.S., he says. This in his view speaks to a higher understanding that end users have about new problems in this market. (Also See: Security Spending for the Long Term)

"When you are sitting in the old world, you probably have the legacy of technology solutions in place and relationships with partners and the ecosystem that bind you to past paradigms, which might not be the case in growing businesses in APAC," he says. Before moving to Asia a year and a half ago, Garavello spent almost 15 years in the European security market. (Also See: The Evolution of Security Technology)

Garavello has been a part of Forcepoint, formerly Websense, for a decade. Previously, he was the VP of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Websense. Prior to that, he worked for an year in 2005 in the pre-sales team at NextiraOne, a European multinational company that designs, installs, maintains and supports business solutions, that has been acquired by Dimension Data. Earlier, he has been a project and area control manager of INIT, an organization that provides architecture, design and programming skills for the introduction of new technology in the field of system developments, for three years. He has also been a system engineer at IBM for a year.
