In a letter posted to the company's Facebook page and its website, K Box says hackers stole the information and posted it to several websites. "According to media reports, the confidential information includes our members' membership numbers and points earned, contact numbers, e-mail addresses, dates of birth and marital status," K Box says.
TODAY, a Singapore-based newspaper, reports that 317,000 customers may have been impacted by the incident.
The apparent hackers sent e-mails to various parties, including TODAY, saying the attack was to protest the government's announcement of a toll hike, which the hackers said causes "an unnecessary financial burden on working Malaysians," the newspaper reports.
"If nothing is done to ease the burden then no Singaporean will be safe, we will continue to release more databases of Singapore companies," the hackers, who call themselves The Knowns, told the newspaper.
K Box says it's conducting a full investigation into the hacking incident and is working with Singapore's Personal Data Protection Commission and Singapore Police Force.
"We have been able to remove the stolen data and links from at least three websites," K Box says. "We wish to assure you that controls and safeguards are in place [to protect] your data and we take your data privacy very seriously."
K Box did not immediately respond to a request for additional information.
