Efficiency Is Key in Global Cyber Capabilities Training

A cyberwar is afoot. Ransomware continues to pervade every aspect of technology and life. But not every country has the means and expertise to prepare and protect itself.

The idea behind the Global Forum on Cyber Expertise Foundation is to promote cybersecurity capacity-building around the world, a priority especially because a lot of countries are way behind on their cyber risk management, said the entity's president Christopher Painter.

"It turns out that the same five guys get trained by 12 different countries and seven different companies. And that's not very efficient, especially when the resources aren't big. So this organization is meant both to promote capacity-building, make it more of a priority, but also coordinate it," he said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Painter also discusses:

  • The organization's international focus and mission;
  • Bringing together economic innovation, cybersecurity, technical and policy communities;
  • What works - and what doesn't - in countering ransomware.

Painter has more than 27 years of experience in cybersecurity and has served as a federal U.S. prosecutor for high-profile cyber cases, preceded by his experience as an executive at the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI and the White House National Security Council. He is also the first cyber diplomat at the U.S. Department of State.
