CISOs Should Use the Defender's Advantage to Their Favor

In a recent report, "Rethinking Tactics: Annual Cybersecurity Roundup 2022," Trend Micro highlighted significant security concerns that arose and persisted in 2022. The report says that cybercriminals, such as the ransomware group LockBit, are taking cues from the software development world by implementing their own bug bounty programs. They are also shifting from Windows to MacOS and Linux, resulting in a sixfold increase in attacks against non-Windows platforms.

The report also found that attackers are targeting small and medium-sized enterprises that may be less equipped to handle advanced persistent threats. "As a result, CISOs and cybersecurity leaders should focus on the concept of a defender's advantage," says Vijendra Katiyar, country manager for India and the SAARC region at Trend Micro. "In other words, if attackers have one month to prepare for a cyberattack, defenders should also have one month to protect themselves."

In a video interview with Information Security Media Group at ISMG's Dynamic CISO Excellence Awards and Conference, Katiyar discusses:

  • How threat actors and ransomware gangs are following the business practices of legitimate companies to improve their operations;
  • The case for consolidation of security solutions;
  • The latest innovations of the Trend Micro One platform.

Katiyar has more than 16 years of experience in various capacities in the technical, sales and consulting areas of cybersecurity. He has served as key speaker at major IT security forums.
