Organizations rushing to integrate AI into their operations face a fundamental challenge that goes beyond technology adoption. Creating sustainable governance frameworks that balance innovation with responsibility is key to addressing this challenge, said Gerry Chng, chairman of AI ethics and governance SIG at Singapore Computer Society.

The ISO SC 42 committee has developed frameworks that mirror successful cybersecurity practices, offering organizations a foundation for developing AI policies and standards. "When we start looking at some of the standards from the SC 42 committee within the ISO organization, there is this family of 42,000 series. It's just like in cybersecurity, we had the 27,000 series. So it follows pretty much the same principles of being very process driven - Plan-Do-Check-Act," Chng said.

The complexity of AI governance demands interdisciplinary collaboration, involving multiple stakeholders across the organization. "When we start looking at governing the use of AI, it touches a lot of different aspects within the organization. When we were talking about scaling AI, you have your data engineers that need to be part of it, but when we start looking into the data itself, these are then business information and data, which then will require the domain experts to have a better appreciation of what those data represent. So this is where then the business units come into play, and they are important key stakeholders into the whole thing around governing of AI," Chng added.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at the GovWare Conference and Exhibition 2024, Chng also discussed:

  • How data pipelining supports AI scaling initiatives;
  • The role of transparency in AI system deployment and user interaction;
  • The fragmented landscape of global AI regulations.

At AI ethics and governance SIG, Chng leads initiatives to promote ethical practices in AI development. With extensive experience in technology management, he collaborates with industry experts and policymakers to establish guidelines that ensure transparency, accountability and fairness in AI systems.
